When in bear country, it's common sense to take along extra protection. Bear pepper spray is a very effective deterrent to attacking bears. Experienced hikers tie small bells to their boot laces to be heard from a distance. Preventing them from surprising a bear on the trail.
If you encounter a bear, don't approach it. Back away while watching the bear increasing the distance between you and the bear. If the bear keeps following you, change direction. If the bear still continues, stand your ground. Stay in a group if able. Scaring it off by yelling, shouting, clapping your hands may work. You need to persuade the bear to leave you alone. If you find yourself being approached or attacked by a bear, use your bear pepper spray and find safety.
Bear attacks are rare, and most can be avoided. Always maintain a healthy respect for wildlife. Never feed wild animals, and be sure to keep an appropriate distance.
